Corbin's Birth

My due date of April 14th, 2000 had come and gone. I was overdue. Every couple days I would get a non-stress test, ultrasound, and whatnot. On the 24th, baby was running out of fluid, and not showing many practice breaths, so I was to be induced if labor didn't start in a couple days. So, 12 days overdue, I surrendered to the fact I'm going to be induced.

When we got to the hospital early that morning, the doctor tried everything in the world to bring on labor naturally. I was already 3cm dilated, and had been that way for over a month. He tried breaking my water twice with a big crochet looking needle, but each time only a trickle would come out. Finally, I gave in and agreed to the pitocin. It was 11:30am.

The contractions didn't really start getting painful until about 2pm. I was still pretty numb from the death of my mother just 19 days before. At 3pm I got the urge to push. At 3:05pm I gave birth to Corbin. He was 10 pounds even and 22 inches long. His head measured 14 inches and his chest 14.

He immediately started searching for something to eat, and was nursing like a champ within minutes of birth. I wanted to go take a shower about an hour later, and the nurse wasn't sure I could handle it. She watched me get up and asked me how I felt. I replied "about 10 pounds lighter!" She smiled and let me take my shower.

Corbin was bald except for a tuft of strawberry blond hair on top of his head. (Must have been where I was 3cm dilated... all the rest was rubbed off!) He was very dried out, and also had 2 big scratches on the top of his head from the doctor trying to break the waters. The doctor speculated that maybe my waters had broke some time before, but his head had acted like a plug. Every time he moved his fingers or toes, they would crack and bleed. I think I over-cooked him!
